Melissa Approves Downtown Redevelopment Project

The Melissa City Council and Planning & Zoning Commission have approved preliminary plans for the redevelopment of the city's downtown sector. The initial project will be the development of a 50,000 square-foot site at the northwest corner of Fannin Road and State Highway 5.

Plans call for retail and restaurant space, a two-story office building and general commercial establishments. A hardware store and coffee shop are among the expected tenants. In order to get the project moving, the council approved a corresponding zoning change.

Melissa Gateway Village Sets Tone for Future Development

The development will be called Melissa Gateway Village. Designed under the guidance of Salser Development, it will include an open-air gathering space for concerts and events that will be able to accommodate up to 300 people.

Construction is expected to take up to 18 months, with groundbreaking slated for later this year. City officials categorized the news as "an exciting development" that is the culmination of ongoing work in the downtown area that began in the early 2000s.
